columbus hispanic heritage month

Several City School District of New Rochelle schools mark Hispanic Heritage Month

through lessons, events and ceremonies. Columbus Elementary Art teacher Leah Bernabei and Antoinette Koehler’s second-grade class partnered to create a display about famed Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Bernabei painted Frida’s portrait and signature facial features, while Koehler’s students created the tissue-paper flowers framing the display. Students learned and wrote a shared writing piece about Kahlo’s life. Bernabei said, “I love collaborating with classroom teachers to create projects like this. Not only does this particular display celebrate our diversity, but it sparks conversations throughout the whole school.”
